Lunan Educational Advancement and Development Corporation (LEADja)
The Lunan Educational Advancement and Development Corporation, also known as LEADja, is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing educational opportunities and improving educational infrastructure across Jamaica. Our mission is to provide scholarships for early childhood education and support the restoration and improvement of educational facilities throughout the island.
Our Origins
LEADja began as a privately funded initiative, inspired by the vision of our founder, Karl Lunan. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2020, Karl and his wife, Susan, recognized the urgent need for electronic devices for students who lacked access to remote learning tools. With the help of friends and family, they successfully provided 29 electronic notebooks to students at the Timothy Burke Basic School in Lucky Hill, Saint Mary, Jamaica.
Our Achievements
- 2022-2023 School Year: LEADja awarded nine full-tuition scholarships to students from financially needy families at the Timothy Burke Basic School.
- 2023-2024 School Year: We provided eight book and school supply scholarships to students entering the Goshen and Newstead Primary Schools and six full-tuition scholarships for students at the Timothy Burke Basic School.
- 2024-2025 School Year: So far, we awarded four full Tuition Scholarships to student at the Timothy Burke Basic School and 13 Book Scholarships to children at the Goshen Primary School. We also hosted a back-to-school registration drive for the Mount Faith Basic Schoo, in Arnet Garden, Trench Town.
Organizational Milestones
In September 2023, LEADja was officially recognized as a corporation by the State of New York. We are currently awaiting approval from the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, which will enable us to expand our reach and impact.
